Monero delisted? Where to buy, sell and swap XMR now

01What happened, and why

Monero hides the sender, the recipient and the amount of every transaction, by default and for everyone. That is exactly what regulated exchanges struggle with: they must be able to trace where deposits come from and report suspicious flows, and on Monero’s ledger there is nothing to trace.

So, one by one, the big platforms left. OKX removed XMR on 5 January 2024 — along with Zcash and Dash. Binance followed on 20 February 2024. Kraken stopped XMR trading for its customers in the European Economic Area on 31 October 2024 and converted the balances left after the withdrawal deadline into bitcoin. Other exchanges made similar decisions, country by country.

The next step is already written into law: the EU’s anti-money-laundering regulation, adopted in 2024, bars regulated crypto service providers in the EU from handling “anonymity-enhancing” coins from 10 July 2027.

What did not change: a delisting is a platform’s decision about what it offers, not a ban on the coin. Holding and using Monero remains legal in most countries — including in the EU after July 2027. Rules differ and change; check yours.

02If your exchange is dropping XMR

Exchanges that delist a coin announce a date for trading to stop, then a later date for withdrawals. After that, what is left is typically converted into something else at the platform’s price — or simply becomes harder to get back. The order of operations is always the same:

  1. Set up a Monero wallet you control Desktop or phone, it takes five minutes. Which wallet to choose.
  2. Withdraw your XMR before the deadline To a fresh subaddress of that wallet — it starts with 8.
  3. Then decide Keep it, or swap it for another asset from your own wallet, on your own schedule, without the platform in the loop.

If the exchange has already converted your balance, the decision was made for you. The coins it gave you back can be swapped to XMR again in a single step, if that is what you want.

Going the other way — from BTC, USDT or anything else into XMR — works the same, and the full walkthrough is in how to swap BTC to XMR without KYC.

05Getting ready for the next delisting

  • Hold your own keys. A delisting only traps coins that sit on the platform. XMR in your own wallet is untouched by any exchange decision.
  • Know your exit before you need it. A swap to BTC or a stablecoin takes one deposit; try a small amount once, so the first time is not the urgent one.
  • Keep a refund address on every swap. If something goes wrong mid-way, the deposit comes back to you automatically instead of waiting on a support ticket.
  • Watch the dates where you live. The EU deadline is July 2027; other countries set their own. The terms of this site ask you to check yours, and mean it.

06Questions people ask

Is Monero illegal now?

In most countries, no. The delistings are decisions by exchanges about what they offer, driven by their regulators. Even the EU rule that applies from July 2027 targets regulated service providers, not individuals: holding and using XMR remains legal there. Laws differ and change — check where you live.

Why did Binance and Kraken delist Monero?

Both cited regulatory requirements. Monero’s ledger does not show senders, recipients or amounts, which conflicts with the monitoring that regulated exchanges must perform on every deposit.

Where can I sell Monero without an account?

On an instant swap service like this one — send XMR, receive BTC, USDT or another asset at your own address — or on a peer-to-peer market if you want cash or a bank transfer. Right now 1 XMR fetches about 539.3725 USDT here.

Will more exchanges delist Monero?

Most likely, at least in the EU ahead of July 2027. The practical answer is the same either way: keep XMR in your own wallet and know how you would swap it if you needed to.

Can I still buy Monero?

Yes — by swapping crypto you already hold, through a peer-to-peer trade, or on an exchange that still lists it where you live. The routes, compared.
