Units
Every unit of bitcoin, and where you meet it
Five names for five sizes of the same thing. Only two of them — BTC and sats — are in everyday use.
| Unit | Symbol | In BTC | In satoshis | Where you meet it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin | BTC | 1 | 100,000,000 | Prices, exchange balances, most wallets |
| Millibitcoin | mBTC | 0.001 | 100,000 | Some older wallets and price boards |
| Bit (microbitcoin) | μBTC, bits | 0.000001 | 100 | A few wallets, as “bits” |
| Satoshi | sat, sats | 0.00000001 | 1 | Fees (sat/vB), Lightning, “stacking sats” |
| Millisatoshi | msat | 0.00000000001 | 0.001 | Lightning Network accounting only |
Explained
What a satoshi is, and why people count in them
-
01
The smallest unit on the chain
A satoshi is one hundred-millionth of a bitcoin, named after Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonymous creator of Bitcoin. Under the hood, every Bitcoin amount is a whole number of sats — “0.5 BTC” is just how wallets display 50,000,000 of them.
-
02
Why sats instead of BTC
At today’s price, everyday amounts are awkward fractions of a bitcoin. “25,000 sats” reads better than “0.00025 BTC”, is harder to misplace a zero in, and is how fees and Lightning payments are already written.
-
03
The dust limit
An output worth less than it would cost to spend is “dust”, and nodes refuse to relay it: below 546 sats to a legacy address, 294 to native SegWit, 330 to Taproot. Tiny amounts belong on Lightning, not on-chain.
FAQ
Sats, in short
How many satoshis are in one bitcoin?
100,000,000 — one hundred million. One satoshi is 0.00000001 BTC, the smallest amount a Bitcoin transaction can record.
How much is 1 satoshi worth in dollars?
About $0.00084 at 12:00 UTC, with bitcoin at $83,752.83. It moves with the price of bitcoin: when BTC gains 10%, so does every sat.
How many sats is one dollar?
About 1,194 sats right now. Ten dollars is about 11,940 sats, a hundred about 119,399.
What is the smallest amount of bitcoin I can send?
On the blockchain, not one sat: nodes refuse to relay an output below the dust limit — 546 sats to a legacy address (1…), 294 to a native SegWit one (bc1q…), 330 to Taproot (bc1p…). In practice the network fee sets a higher floor. The Lightning Network, which settles off-chain, goes down to 1 sat.
Can I get sats without an account?
Yes — by swapping crypto you already hold. Send USDT, ETH, XMR or any of 1,018 assets, receive BTC at your own address, no sign-up. From USDT on TRC20 the smallest swap is about 20,058 sats right now. USDT to BTC.
