How to send USDT (TRC20) without TRX

01Why sending USDT needs TRX

USDT on TRON is not TRON’s own coin: it is a TRC20 token, a smart contract. Moving it means running that contract, and TRON meters contract work in energy (plus a little bandwidth for the size of the transaction). An account can get energy by staking TRX or by having it delegated; when it has none, the network burns TRX from the account to pay instead.

So a wallet holding 5,000 USDT and 0 TRX cannot move a cent of it. Depending on the app, the error says “insufficient energy”, “not enough bandwidth”, “TRX balance insufficient” — or the send button simply stays grey. The amount of USDT does not matter: sending 10 or 10,000 costs the same energy.

02What one transfer costs today

Energy and TRX burned by one USDT transfer on TRON
Sending USDT to…EnergyTRX burnedIn dollars
An address that already holds USDT 65,000 6.5 TRX $2.14
An address that never held USDT 130,000 13 TRX $4.28

Energy priced at 100 sun per unit (0.0001 TRX), the network parameter since 29 August 2025; TRX at 0.3296 USDT, quoted by this desk at 16:29 UTC. Energy per transfer is approximate and depends on the recipient.

Why double for a new address? The first USDT an address ever receives creates a new balance entry in the USDT contract, and writing new data costs twice the energy of updating it.

When this desk pays you in USDT on TRC20, it burns that energy itself: the payout network fee it counts is 5.4459 USDT right now, already inside every quote. You need no TRX to receive USDT — only to send it.

03Five ways to send when you have no TRX

1. Have a few TRX sent to your address

The simplest: withdraw a small amount of TRX from any exchange account you have, or ask someone to send it. About 20 TRX covers one transfer to a new address with a margin; the exchange pays its own withdrawal fee, you need nothing on your side.

2. Swap another coin you hold into TRX

If you have crypto on another network — BTC, LTC, SOL, USDT on BNB Chain — swap a little of it into TRX, paid to the same TRON address that holds your USDT. No account, one deposit.

Smallest swap into TRX from other assets, right now
FromSmallest swapSwap
LTCLitecoin 0.0073395 LTC LTC → TRX
SOLSolana 0.00525 SOL SOL → TRX
BTCBitcoin 0.0000179 BTC BTC → TRX
USDT (BEP20)Tether (Binance Smart Chain) 0.5882972 USDT USDT → TRX

3. Rent energy

Energy rental markets delegate energy to your address for an hour or a day, for less than the TRX it would burn. You pay them — usually in TRX, sometimes in USDT — and your next transfer uses their energy. Only ever give a rental service your address: a service that asks for your private key or seed phrase is a thief.

4. Use a wallet that takes the fee in USDT

Some TRON wallets can deduct the network fee from the USDT you send, through TRON’s GasFree service, so no TRX is needed at all. It costs a little more than burning TRX yourself; check whether your wallet offers it before moving to another one.

5. Stake TRX for energy

For frequent senders: TRX staked for energy regenerates it every day. It takes a lot of staked TRX to cover even one transfer a day, so it only pays for people who move USDT constantly — and it needs TRX in the first place.

04What does not work

  • Swapping the stuck USDT itself into TRX. Sending USDT to any deposit address — an exchange’s or this desk’s — is a TRC20 transfer, and needs the same energy. Bring TRX or energy first.
  • Sending the USDT “on another network”. USDT that is on TRON stays on TRON until it moves; a wallet cannot send TRC20 tokens over BEP20 or ERC20.
  • Anyone asking for your seed phrase to “unlock” a transfer. No legitimate fix needs it.

05So it does not happen again

  • Keep 20 to 30 TRX next to your USDT. Enough for two or three transfers, even to new addresses (13 TRX each at today’s energy price).
  • Receiving from a swap? Nothing to prepare: this desk pays the energy on the payout. It is the next move, from your wallet, that needs TRX.
  • Choose the network by where the money goes next. If you will send it on, receive USDT on a network where you already hold the gas coin. How the USDT networks compare.

06Questions people ask

How much TRX do I need to send USDT?

About 6.5 TRX if the recipient already holds USDT, about 13 TRX if they never have — at the current energy price of 100 sun per unit, or roughly $2.14 and $4.28 today. Keep a few more for margin.

Why is my USDT TRC20 fee so high?

Probably because the recipient has never held USDT: the first transfer to an address costs twice the energy. Or because your account has no free bandwidth left for the day, which adds a little more burned TRX.

Can I pay the TRC20 fee in USDT?

Only with a wallet that supports it — through TRON’s GasFree service — or by renting energy from a service that accepts USDT. By default, the fee is paid in TRX.

Can I swap my USDT TRC20 to TRX here if I have no TRX?

Not directly: sending your USDT to the deposit address is itself a TRC20 transfer and needs energy. Get a little TRX first — from an exchange, from someone, or by swapping another coin into TRX — then swap as much USDT as you like.

Does the person receiving USDT pay anything?

No. On TRON the sender pays the energy. The recipient needs TRX only later, when they send the USDT on.
